Self Build Help
Self build for those that aspire to the perfect home that meets their exacting requirements down to every last detail is something fraught with problems. Most people that do this, do this for the first time and I can see why it seems daunting. The aim is to make sure your dreams stay beautiful, that your self build project goes to plan.
Some people not willing to accept help, often appear on programs when it all goes wrong. But most people who prepare well and take on advice fair better. The question is what are you going to do read on or head off?
What Choices Do I Have?
You have two choices:
- Literally self build this yourself or
- Have someone else build it for you
The first means you will need to go and learn a lot of skills and spend a lot of money doing so if you do not have the experience, this depends on budget and the value you place on your time. Or you pay for someone else to do it for you. If you opt to pay someone else then this has a couple of choices, these are:
- Project manage it yourself or
- Get someone to project manage it.
This article is really aimed at the ‘have someone build it for you’ audience. So if you are going to build yourself parts of it will be useful. Please bear in mind it was not primarily aimed at you.
What follows in the different sections is where I will share my ten years’ experience, the same experience I have turned to my advantage. This will save you some of learning the hard way which is always more expensive especially when you are ill prepared and doing your first self build.
It has become clear that the approach I take when tackling a large project is something that could benefit others especially the self build. Let me be frank and it is time for some honesty from you! You might be practical, but the fact you are trawling the internet and have clicked this page suggest that you are in-experienced? I might be wrong, if so I apologise. However if I am right….

I have decided to add this section to the blog so I can talk and share personally with you my 10 years’ experience in dealing with trades and refurbishments. Let me be clear from the off, I have not done a self build, however I have done some very extensive refurbishments and I do so regularly. During 2014 we have done three and over the coming years that number is only going to become higher.
Although these are not properties I am self building for myself they are properties that have required significant work. We buy these for investment and often they require much doing. It does mean I am regularly dealing with a lot of the stuff you will have to deal with on a daily basis when it comes to your self build. So what I have to share will definitely be useful. Over the past ten years I have also supplied luxury kitchens in some stunning homes. This work has meant I have personally dealt with all the trades you are going to deal with.
