Is Cooking About More About Ingredients or Environment??
There is much talk about locally sourced produce, MSG, Meals in 30 minutes, eating healthily all this is about a healthy lifestyle and improving peoples eating habits, obesity is on the up and what we eat is to blame, or is it??
Maybe we are not inspired by the environment we need to cook in?, maybe we would rather be in and out as quickly as possible because we dislike it so much? When I have been asked to look at an old kitchen that is ready for replacement I have noticed a distinct lack of new cook books, clutter on top of units a microwave quite prominently placed and clearly well used. Generally a tired and unloved kitchen. Even as someone who loves cooking I have never yet felt inspired to cook in these.
As part of what we do we ask what type of cook they are and people are often almost apologising for the fact they are using more convenience food. Often saingy they do not like being in the kitchen and find themselves eating more convenience food and takeaways, what is clear is it has crept up on them over two years.
For those people we have worked for after the work has been completed I have heard comments like “We are spending more time in the kitchen and have even started baking”, “We have had more people round for dinner”, “We love the kitchen now”, “We have gained an extra room”. These comments are typical of what I hear.
So is cooking just about ingredients, or might the actual room affect cooking habits as well. It is all very well for celebrity chefs who have great kitchens and space to move. But in the real world, not everyone has the luxury of a well planned kitchen. Or has it got nothing to do with the kitchen and it all about ingredients?
