How To Design YOUR House
Why did I write this article on ‘How to design your house?’
Right now this is highly topical for Denson Blake as we are writing a book to help those wondering how to design a house. This has come about following meeting many people who find this idea daunting. Sharing what I know to your benefit so you can get your project done on time and on budget and more importantly to a standard that is right for you.
You have found this page because you are wondering how to design your house?
Unless you meant for Christmas or Halloween then this is not for you! But if your question was about your dream home then read on!
We are currently interviewing architects, builders and designers to create the definitive book to help you through this process that will mean when you have finished you will be able to realise that dream more confidently. It will give you greater control on the costs and getting it done on time. We anticipate it will be available early second quarter of 2015. So might be worth dropping us a line if you are interested so we can make sure you are one of the first to receive it.
What has become apparent and ALL AGREE that you are not likely to think about this stage enough. So I am writing this article to help make sure you do. Otherwise if you don’t some of the horror stories I have heard would put you off. Building your own home to your exact specification is likely to be the sort of thing you have dreamed of and worked hard for many years. The book will help you keep that dream alive and better understand how to help yourself get a GREAT OUTCOME!!
Where Do You Start?
First thing’s first you have asked a quality question by asking how to design your house? Well done in not jumping in blind like many, however this is only the first question. So what else should you ask? and why is it important? I can tell you that of the architects I have spoken to ALL SAY CLIENTS ARE ILL PREPARED and MORE INFORMATION IS NEEDED! But what the hell is this supposed to mean? What information? and what is well prepared? Well the book will answer this for you. Because they ALL say the same thing, the lack of this causes delays and can make the design process a frustrating one for those involved.
The first thing to understand is why you want to do this? Is it for a big bold statement of all your hard work? If it is be proud and say so with the blatant DAMN IT! I worked hard for this and I DESERVE IT! I will be the first to say well done in achieving so much.
Or is it because you just cannot find the ‘perfect’ house? Is the fact you cannot find the perfect house because you cannot see it in amongst all the others? Because let me be frank with you, if you struggle to see a house’s potential then building your own home might not be the answer. This is because there would be even less to see before you commit yourself. I can also tell you that ALL architects say you are very likely to struggle to understand and ‘see’ the plans, all architects want to know how to design your house for you and information is the key!
Are you wondering how to design your house because you are tired of the space you have? Has your family expanded and your existing space no longer works for you? Do you need a change of scenery and figure might as well make it an impressive one? Maybe it is more about the fact that you can get more bang for your buck as they say by building your own (Very savvy I must say, and if you want more of a chat about how that can be improved then drop me a line personally I can let you in to some great secrets)? Whatever your reason is be clear and perhaps write it down as a heading so you can remind yourself why you are doing this. It will help keep you focussed on all the following steps you take whilst you are working through the how to design your house
It is important to be clear about why you want to know how to design your house before you go head long in to committing money in to designing your ideal home. Why because the thing that is frustrating you, might be able to be solved in a less costly way. However designing your home and the idea of having a home that has been designed and built for you might be SO appealing that is reason enough? Either way have a list of answers as to why you want to design your own house, this information will be invaluable to an architect if you do go down this road.
Your Question Could Have Two Meanings!
You are either working with an existing structure in which case the question how to design your house related to the internal layout of the rooms or your question was about starting from scratch and the question was really how to design your house from scratch or you could have been wondering how to design your house for Halloween or Christmas and you became so captivated that you have found yourself reading this far, so you are just going to carry on. Well done!! And thanks.
Either way the result is still the same but designing a house from scratch has the added dimension of how the whole building will look. Again understand why you want to do this by uncovering the real reason for you wanting this will be important so the questions outlined before will hopefully get you thinking.
Why Do ALL Architects Say You Are Not Prepared Enough?
Part of what I deal with in the book is answering this fully with some ideas for you to take on board to help solve this. These ideas have been tossed around during interviewing architects when discussing how to design a house. But the crux of the matter is that you do not think enough about what you want. Apparently you are likely to go to the architect with no clear idea of what rooms you want? What furniture you will be having in it? or how big those rooms should be? never mind wondering how to design your house.
What is important to an architect is having a clear brief and one of the answers to solving this is building a mood board of all the stuff you love. You may or may not have come across Pinterest? This is a great platform for doing this. You can click and save pictures make a board or multiple boards with notes about all the stuff you love. This is an important first step in how to design your house. You have to begin with the end in mind. There is no use starring at a blank page you need to collect the things you like.
You could make a board showing what style of building you like, you could have another that shows what you like your interiors to look like. Doing this would give the architect so much more information than you are likely to turn up with. I hear you saying “But I am so busy being successful that I don’t have the time” MAKE THE TIME!! It is the bain of ALL designers lives and I speak from experience when designing luxury kitchens for people never mind wonder how to design your house and all the rooms you are not sure you want. Otherwise you will spend more time in the long run. I am sure you could find a couple of hours for a few weeks and if you managed eight weeks you will have dedicated two full working days to it. This would help an architect answer how to design your house making it a better end result for you.
So stop winging and just get on to it!.
Once you have done this then maybe it is time to go further in to how to design your house and come back again as I will be writing more articles on this subject over the coming months and particularly as I craft the book. So watch this space!
