Create Mood boards
Why Are They Useful?
A well put together mood board is a great insight in to your own personal tastes. Many people when wanting something designed whether that is an interior, or a piece of furniture, start collecting images of the things similar to what they want. Taking this approach is not perhaps the best approach to create mood boards. The reason mood boards are useful is because they offer a way for a designer to ‘tune’ in to your tastes. A well put together mood board should have a clear style running through it. Often not showing lots of examples similar to what you want, as this just makes it harder to see your personal tastes.
Getting Images to Create Mood Boards
You need to find things you like from lots of different areas of design. You could collect architecture, show colour schemes you like, lighting, fashion, Art, graphic design, window displays, automotive design, different rooms that appeal to you. The key thing is to makes notes about why you have included the images you have included. Often there are parts of that image that have drawn you in. The designer working for you will need to know what those elements are. Once you have started to collect enough images the designer should be able to add to the board and it appeal to you.
It is important for ALL people involved in the design to have input into the mood board, however make sure when you are making your notes that you remember to mention which of the parties like what and why. Otherwise the mood board could look quite confused.
How Do I Put The Mood Board Together?
You can either do it the old fashioned way with a ‘board’, note paper, your collection of images as well as a mountain of glue. As the name name suggests, this was usually a board with lots of images stuck on it. There are occasions when this still might be the best method to create mood boards after all you cannot scan texture on a computer, or if part of what you need to show is something about the materials used then this is a good way forward. However if what you need to show is all image based then using Pinterest is a great way of working collaboratively with your designer.
How Do You Use Pinterest To Create Mood Boards?
It is a really simple application to create mood boards, however if you are not familiar with how to get images you see on your computer screen pasted on to the board then it may appear more tricky than you thought. The first thing to do is perhaps create a new folder on your computer so you have somewhere specific to save all the images you are going to collect. Next search the internet for what you are looking for using Google Images. You can simply type what you are looking for in the search box and hey presto you will have all the images from all over the internet right on your computer to create mood boards of what you are looking for. The next thing to do is simply right click the image and ‘save image as’ to the new folder you created. You can keep doing this until you have all the images you want for you board.
It is useful to create mood boards of the different things you are looking for and not clump everything in to one board, this may seem obvious but stay focussed on what you are collecting images for and why, too often a board can appear very confused.
